What is microdosing?
Microdosing is taking small doses of a psychoactive substance. People who microdose usually do this repeatedly during a certain period, for example a month. A single microdose is so small that it won’t evoke a complete trip (with all the visual changes that are usually experienced). Usually a microdosis is between 1/20 and 1/10 of a recreational dose. The effect of a microdosis is therefore subtle, but can nevertheless have a very pleasant and useful effect. There are different substances people use for microdosing, but in this blog we focus on microdosing Magic Truffles.
When did micodosing start?
Microdosing may be older than modern man. In the late 1990s, ethnobotanist and writer Terence McKenna caused a stir with his book Food of the Gods, in which he suggested his stoned ape theory. The central idea of this theory comes is that people developed from homo erectus to homo sapien by eating small amounts of psychedelic mushrooms. The active substance in these mushrooms, psilocybin, would have enabled the brain to make new connections, which made important steps in the development from homo eructus to homo sapien possible. The theory of McKenna has created renewed interest in microdosing. Before that, there was the chemist Albert Hofman, in the sixties, who suggested psychedelic substances can be an alternative to certain forms of medication (especially stimulants, which often have many side effects).
People who microdose report all sorts of benefits, such as better focus and an increase in creative thoughts. Interestingly, normal functioning is not negatively affected. On the contrary, people have the idea that they perform better, for example in the field of work. Around 2015, a true micro-dosage trend even arose in Sillicon Valley, the place where many high-tech companies work on all kinds of innovations. Earlier, in 2010, researcher Dr. James Fadiman had begun to record the experiences of people who are microdosing. Fadiman created a protocol that allowed people to keep track of their experiences with microdosing over the course of a month. He has now collected the experiences of over 1500 people. Fadiman is still working on a publication in which he reveals all his findings, but he has already stated that people who practice microdosing generally do the things they do better and that they feel more comfortable with what they do.
What effects of microdosing can be expected?
Below a number of effects of microdosing are listed that have been reported by different users. Keep in mind that all these effects come from self-report, therefore we cannot say these effects are “evidence based” or “scientifically proven”. More studies are needed before we

How does it work?
The use of psychedelic substances has an effect on the brain. It is often suggested that you use different parts of your brain and that new connections are formed. A certain type of brain scan, the CAT scan, seems to confirm this, as the brain lights up in many more areas while under the influence of psychedelics. This could possibly explain some of the effects of microdosing, such as increased creativity and greater problem-solving abilities.
